How I Get It Done-Caffeinated Dad

In case you want to know a little more about me, I must say I love a good cup of coffee. I love it at all times of the day. In the morning, I can skip breakfast, but I can’t skip my coffee. In the afternoon there is nothing that gives me more of a pick me up than a nice cup of coffee with cream. And in the evenings, if I don’t have to work the next day there is nothing more relaxing than a hot cup of black coffee while I am settling down for the evening. But it’s not just coffee. I also love other caffeinated beverages, including tea and Diet Mountain Dew. Except for the caffeine drinks like Redbull and Monster, I live a fairly caffeinated lifestyle. I know it’s how I get it all done in a day. From getting up at 6:00am to going to bed at 11:00pm, I seem to try to fit more and more into my daily routine with a good caffeine boost.

Photo(2)I know that there are some down sides to the beverage, especially if you are having heart palpitations, bad breath, or brown teeth; but there are definitely some upsides to it as well. There is plenty out there that tells of the benefits that coffee and caffeine can provide, and if you need some help finding them, here is one from WebMD and another from Men’s Health. It often comes in some initially questionable and bitter, but soon to be delicious concoctions. It’s funny how your taste adapts quickly. Similar to beer, the bitterness of coffee is a little different when you have your first sip, but is craved soon thereafter. And as I have eluded to already, I can get a lot done with a regular dose of caffeine throughout the day, including getting the kids up in the morning, dropping them off at daycare, working a 10 hour day, spending time with my wife and kids in the evening, and then doing some hobbies at night time, including this blog.

I do know some people who think I am crazy for liking the stuff, almost reacting like the stuff will be the death of me. They must not see the same senior citizens drinking coffee like I do in morning fellowship at church. I do think that your ability to drink coffee all depends on how your body interacts with it. Everything is about moderation and balance. Some days I drink less, and some days I drink more. I must say the obvious, though. I don’t have heart palpitations, but if you do you should probably drop the caffeine and see your doctor. But that is not my case, and therefore, I drink.

How do I drink it? Well, In the mornings I like to have my coffee either black or with a little cream and sweetener, which is another questionable substance, but using the latest brands of sweeteners takes away some of my guilt (who knows what the future research will show about this stuff, but for now- it’s good).. In the afternoon, some more coffee with cream. And in the evening, if I don’t have to get up early, there’s something good about having a nice warm cup of coffee on a cold evening. As a side note, I do fit in the water throughout the day.

My suppliers vary. At home I like to brew Dunkin’ Donuts brand. It has good flavor that is a little mellow on the bitter scale. Additionally, I enjoy Caribou, Berres Brothers, and Seattles Best. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention a favorite local brand called Smokey Row that roasts a lot of aromatic and delicious flavors, including my favorite- candy bar. And just to show that I am not a coffee snob, I have been know to enjoy Foldgers Gourmet Blend when my pocket book and coffee habits don’t mix. It too is pretty good coffee, but at a cheaper price. To top all of this name dropping coffee listing, about a year ago my wife got me a how-yah-doin’, 3-minute-brewin’ Bunn coffee maker. Ahh, She loves me. I must say that I have never brewed a better cup from home.

If I don’t drink it at home, I do enjoy a coffee from Starbucks or Caribou, although I feel that Starbucks brews some very strong coffee sometimes. While I do like Starbucks, this lends me to favor Caribou Coffee if the two stores are within a few blocks of one another. Unfortunately, though, with many Starbucks locations in my hometown, including the one at my work, this lends me to go to Starbucks more than not.

So, I hope I didn’t bore you with my coffee and caffeine talk, but I love the stuff. It gets me through the day, especially with little ones. Who knows, I will probably cut down on the stuff when I get older, but for now it’s the one vice for me.

Disclaimer: All brands listed above were purchased through my own funds that in no way were solicited by the brands listed above prior to the publishing of this post. If in fact afterwords a supplier would be interested in supplying my coffee habit, there is a large possibility that I might then take the offer because it is not beneath me to sell out for a good cup of coffee :)

  • Never been a fan of coffee, I've only had it a handful of times. The ones I like have way too much sugar in them to make them palatable for me, so I just skip them these days.
  • It's funny how things that start in childhood follow you as an adult. My father would make his coffee much the same way that you described above. He would let us take a sip, and I would try to take the longest sip possible before he would tell me that it was enough. It was like sugar water. Now I am good with the real stuff.
  • Pouring my coffee is the first thing I do every single morning. I would drink it all day if I didn't have such horrible insomnia too.
  • Man, this sounds like it was written by a true addict!

I used to drink a fair bit, but for some reason just weened myself off of it. However, I do still love a good cup of coffee (or any other caffeinated beverage).

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the smell of coffee but HATE HATE HATE the taste.

Give me a tall glass of coke, though, and I'm super-happy.

(add some Jack? Super-super happy. But not wanting to get much done at that point. :) )
  • I'm in love and her name is coffee.
